About Hotel Thaxter

A boutique hotel rooted in Portsmouth history, thoughtful design, and the creative spirit of Celia Thaxter.

Designed Around Portsmouth

Hotel Thaxter blends contemporary comfort with the character of downtown Portsmouth. Thoughtful interiors, local artwork, warm lighting, and intimate spaces create a stay that feels connected to the city around it.

Originally built in 1860, the historic building has been reimagined into a boutique hotel with thoughtfully designed guest rooms, spacious suites, and onsite dining at Nichinan.

Inspired by Celia Thaxter

Writer, artist, gardener, and hostess, Celia Thaxter became known for cultivating creativity and connection along the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire.

Her appreciation for nature, art, hospitality, and gathering inspired the spirit of Hotel Thaxter today — from the botanical influences woven throughout the interiors to the thoughtful, intimate experience of the hotel itself.
